The milling machine, also known as a cold planer, pavement planer, pavement recycler, or roto-mill, is an essential piece of equipment used in road construction and maintenance. It is specifically designed to remove bituminous pavement or asphalt cement from existing road surfaces, leaving behind a smooth, even, and durable base for resurfacing or recycling. Milling machines are typically used to repair damaged roads, remove old or worn pavement layers, or prepare the surface for new asphalt application.

The milling process involves rotating, high-speed cutters that remove the asphalt layer in controlled depths, typically ranging from a fraction of an inch to several inches. The machine's rotating drum is equipped with sharp, durable carbide teeth that pulverize and grind the asphalt, which is then collected by the machine's conveyor system and can be hauled away for disposal or recycled into new asphalt. This process allows for precise, efficient removal of material without damaging the underlying roadbed or sub-base.
